Scarlet firethorn "Jarko-krasnaja"
Fire thorn "Jarko-krasnaja" - Pyracantha coccinea = Mespilus pyracantha.
A perennial, evergreen shrub from the Rosaceae family.
Pyracantha is unpretentious and grows well in open ground in regions with a mild and moderate climate, and in colder zones - as a potted plant or as a bonsai.
The leaves are oval, evergreen, up to 5 cm in length. The branches are covered with infrequent, but long (up to 2.5 cm) and quite sharp thorns.
Flowering occurs in early summer and is so abundant that the flowers (and later the berries) can completely hide the leaves of the plant!
Red berries remain on the bush until the end of winter.
Pyracantha is unpretentious, drought-resistant and undemanding to the composition of the soil. Prefers semi-shaded and windless areas. Adult specimens of the bush reach 6 meters in height and width.
Agricultural technology.
Seeds are sown in open ground in autumn or spring (in the latter case, cold stratification is desirable: seeds are mixed with sand and kept at a low positive temperature). When the plants get stronger, they are planted in a permanent place.
After 2-3 years, pyracantha grows to its full potential.
It is used to decorate buildings and create hedges.
It is better to plant bushes in partial shade, avoiding lowlands and open windy areas.
In the northern regions, it sometimes freezes to the root collar, but quickly renews with shoots. Plants should be covered for the winter. The main pruning is carried out in early spring, before the start of new growth (removing old berries). At the end of summer, excessively long new branches are shortened a little.
Pyracantha can be grown at home in a pot, but regular pruning and wintering of the plant in cool conditions (0 +7 °C with protection from the wind) are required. Pyracantha is replanted no more than once every 2-3 years to disturb the root system less often. You can form the plant in the form of a standard with a drooping lush crown.
Scarlet firethorn in bonsai culture.
When creating a bonsai from pyracantha, the shape is given to young green shoots. Working with young branches requires special care due to their strong fragility.
Pyracantha can also be designed as a cascade or an upright bush with one or more trunks.
